Pelvic Floor Essentials for Yoga Teachers

  • Yoga Habit 1640 Fairmount Avenue Philadelphia, PA, 19130 United States (map)

This practical, experiential workshop is designed to give yoga teachers a clearer, more embodied understanding of the pelvic floor and how it shows up in breath, movement, and lifestyle. Rooted in functional anatomy and trauma-informed principles, this workshop invites yoga teachers to feel, observe, and understand—rather than “fix” or control the body. Teachers will leave with tools to support core stability, breath awareness, and pelvic health without overcueing or causing harm.

We’ll explore & practice:

1. Understand what the pelvic floor is, where it lives, and how it functions within the core canister (pelvis, diaphragm, deep core, spine).

2. An overview of common patterns of hypertonic (overactive) and hypotonic (under-engaged); and how they show up in yoga spaces

3. Experiential breath practices to feel how the diaphragm and pelvic floor move together, using imagery and tactile awareness.

4. Experience how the pelvic floor functions within yoga poses and transitions, focusing on stability, release, and functional strength rather than gripping or tucking.

5. Gain clear guidance on what to cue, what to avoid, how to offer variety within poses, and how to use inclusive, invitational language in public classes.

About the instructor: Alyssa Martin completed her 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training at Wake Up Yoga in 2020, and has since expanded her education through certifications in Yin, Restorative, and Prenatal Yoga, along with a 300-hour advanced training at Three Queens Yoga. Now a 500-hour E-RYT and RPYT, Alyssa teaches a wide range of practitioners and integrates a strong foundation in functional anatomy and pelvic biomechanics into her classes, offering precise cueing, mindful alignment, and adaptable modifications that support sustainability. Outside of the studio, Alyssa is likely cuddling with her cat, exploring new corners of the world, or supporting pregnant clients as a dedicated doula.
